Ballou High School Project

Ballou High School

Project Overview

The new Ballou Senior High School facility will be constructed, adjacent to the existing school. It will feature a monumental new design that will make it one of the finest academic facilities in the United States. The design for the new Ballou features “green” energy-efficient systems as well as high-tech, multi-media data projectors; classroom sound-enhancement systems; and flexible, student-focused learning environments with advanced computer and science labs.

The new building will welcome students back from winter break in January 2015 with 37 new classrooms as well as science labs, auto mechanic training and cosmetology training centers, a culinary arts kitchen, a greenhouse, performing and visual arts spaces, a swimming pool and more. The second phase of construction, including a new football stadium and auxiliary field, is slated to be done in August 2015.

Students will not be displaced during construction of the new school. They will be attending the existing school during construction of the new facility.

Ballou High School's 'Topping Out' Celebration July 14, 2014

Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry, DC Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Kaya Henderson, and Department of General Services (DGS) Director Brian Hanlon celebrated the “topping out” of the new Ballou Senior High School campus.

The DGS modernization team were on hand to view the topping out of the building’s steel frame, which signifies that the structural components of the building are complete and marks the fact that the construction team is now less than six months away from substantial completion of Phase 1 of the modernization project.
