Mayor Gray to Cut Ribbon on New Fort Greble Playground

Civil War History is the Theme of the District’s Newest Play Space, Part of Play DC Initiative

Gray; Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry; Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Jesús Aguirre; Department of General Services (DGS) Deputy Director of Capital Construction Services June Locker; Leckie Elementary School Principal Atasha James; ANC Commissioner Thea Dyson; ANC Commissioner Jay Lee; and other government officials will join the Ward 8 community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Fort Greble Playground, the District's newest play space.

BACKGROUND: Fort Greble’s playground design is inspired by local Civil War history and builds in fun play elements inspired by history and by nature. As part of the Mayor’s Sustainable DC initiative, the park features a green roof pavilion and an extensive storm water management system for its new community garden. New amenities include a Pebble Flex® safety surface for the playground, an artificial field turf, new splash pad, ADA-accessible equipment and picnic tables, barbecue grills, a new parking lot with re-enforced turf, an outdoor classroom, new basketball courts and bleachers.

The new playground is part of the Play DC initiative, a partnership between DPR and DGS to evaluate, upgrade and maintain all the play spaces in DPR’s inventory.
