DC Department of General Services (DGS)


The mission of the Department of General Services (DGS) is to elevate the quality of life for the District with superior construction, first-rate maintenance and expert real estate management. By building and maintaining safe and green state-of-the-art facilities which foster economic growth and elevate educational environments, our trusted and skillful employees create modern and vibrant communities across all of the District of Columbia.

Summary of Services

The Department of General Services (DGS) is the result of the consolidation of capital construction and real property management functions of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM), Department of Real Estate Services (DRES), Municipal Facilities: Non-Capital Agency (ZXO), Fire and Emergency Management Services (FEMS), Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the facilities management responsibilities of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Consequently, DGS carries out a broad range of real estate management functions. In addition to managing capital improvement and construction programs for a variety of District government agencies, DGS also executes real property acquisitions by purchase or lease, disposes of property through sale, lease or other authorized method, manages space in buildings and adjacent areas, and provides building management services for facilities owned or operated by the District.

Among the services provided are engineering, custodial, security, energy conservation, utility management, general maintenance, inspection, planning, capital repairs and improvement.
