DGS Integrated Pest Management FAQ

Department of General Services (DGS) manages pest abatement in and around District-owned and leased properties– including DC Public Schools (DCPS), Department of Parks and Recreation centers (DPR), public safety and health facilities, and more. DGS uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM), a systematic process to achieve long-term, environmentally safe pest abatement.

The ONLY way IPM can be successful is with YOUR participation! We ALL play a part in pest management!

This work is vital in order to:

  • Reduce potential health hazards or threats to safety;
  • Enhance the quality of life for facility tenants, employees, and visitors;
  • Prevent damage to District structures or property; and
  • Prevent pests from spreading into the larger community.

How YOU can help DGS keep DC Government facilities pest-free:

  • Keep doors closed as you enter and exit the building.
  • Sanitize workstations daily, prioritizing places where food is prepared and stored.
  • Do not leave food unattended.
  • Avoid eating in carpeted areas or on furnishings where food particles can become trapped.
  • Bag all food waste before disposing it in the correct waste container. Double-check that the waste container lid is closed.
  • Consolidate all waste receptacles (interior and exterior) into the main waste unit nightly for collection.
  • Do not overfill or pile up on overflowing dumpsters or trash cans.
  • Coordinate bulk item removal with DGS before dumping items at/near the dumpsters.
  • Promptly work with your team to create a work order notifying DGS of IPM needs, including reporting open gaps and places where pests may be entering a facility.

To request pest abatement, submit a work order request via Salesforce. Requests can be entered by the onsite manager, Directors or Managers of School Logistics, Foreperson, and Principals at DCPS facilities.
