Building Design and Operations Training

DGS has previously, as resources allowed, offered trainings to its building engineers. The trainings have ranged from topics on how to perform low-level building energy audits to designing buildings to green standards to using the DGS Enterprise Building Automation System (eBAS).

In 2016, DGS-Sustainability and Energy (DGS-SE) recognized the gap in local training for building science and energy efficiency. DGS-SE partnered with the University of the District of Columbia’s Center for Architectural Innovation the Building Science (CAIBS) to offer training to public and private sector employees, as well as workforce development candidates. Since then, DGS has sent more than 75 employees to UDC’s training program for continuing education or to earn certifications. DGS has also worked with the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) and other partners to offer trainings across the District.

In a Building Re-tuning training in 2018, building operators learn simple tricks for making their buildings more energy-efficient and cost effective.

Available Trainings:

DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) Train Green Program is a training, credentialing, and certification program for District-Certified Business Enterprises (CBEs), CBE-eligible firms, and others. DC residents can acquire new or enhanced skills and knowledge around energy efficiency and renewable energy design, construction, inspection, and maintenance at no cost. These e-learning courses teach how to assess buildings’ energy needs, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement low-cost changes to reduce overall energy consumption.

Federal Energy Management Program Training Catalog offers online and on-site courses designed for Federal construction, operations, and maintenance staff in the Federal building and fleet space. These classes are also great resources for others.

Prior DGS trainings:

FY2018: DGS, University of the District of Columbia (UDC), and the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) scaled up their training offerings in fiscal year 2018, providing training for the public and private sectors. Trainings offered included:
Building Retuning overview course- Fall 2018;
• Building Retuning for Buildings with BAS - Summer/Fall 2018;
• Building Operator Certification (BOC)at the DCSEU - Fall 2018;
• LEED Green Associate (GA) - Winter 2018;
• Building Re-tuning - February 2018; and
• Building Re-tuning - May 2018.

FY2017: DGS partnered with UDC to offer local building science training, and formed the UDC Center for Architectural Innovation and Building Science (CAIBS). DGS and UDC collaborated with the DCSEU and the Pennsylvania College of Technology to provide training to local workforce development participants to specifically fill the local training gap.

Trainings offered to the public and private sector included:
Building Operator Certification Training; and
• LEED Green Associate Training.

FY2016:
Training offered to DGS staff included Building Operator Certification Training (BOC).
