The 611 N Street project will renovate and expand the existing building that houses the New Endeavors by Women (NEW) program. New Endeavors by Women has been serving unaccompanied homeless women in the District since 1988.

DC’s Department of General Services is managing the construction of the new facility for the DC Department of Human Services. The existing building was built in the 1970’s as a police station with a concrete structure frame and concrete rib slab floor and ceiling. The exterior walls are infill concrete block and brick. The interior is mostly a bare shell that was retrofitted in 1988 to house a program for homeless women, provide training and opportunities for them to improved their skills in an effort to improve their chances for success as they re-enter society.

The new building is designed to meet LEED Gold standards. The existing building interior will be demolished and a portion of the front of the building will be removed to allow for an accessible entrance at the level half below grade.  Renovations will also include new staff offices, 30 transitional units; each unit will contain 5 clusters of 6 bedrooms which will be located on the renovated and expanded first floor level. The exterior of the building will be clad in a mixture of reclaimed brick from the existing building, a glass window wall opening to the garden entry, and varying colors of EIFS with punched window openings.  A modular green roof system will also be installed.
