Overview
The Department of General Services’ Sustainability and Energy Management Division (DGS-SE) is responsible for transforming the District’s utilities and building footprint, through energy and sustainability efforts while saving taxpayer dollars and creating local jobs. The District’s real estate portfolio provides workspace to 77 agencies; serves approximately 100,000 occupants each weekday; and is composed of approximately 40 million square feet of building space across more than 840 facilities. DGS-SE has three core objectives: limit portfolio resource consumption and environmental impacts; increase digital control and system knowledge of the building portfolio; and deliver cost savings to District taxpayers and agencies.
DGS-SE supports citywide climate and sustainability initiatives, such as Sustainable DC 2.0, Clean Energy DC, and Zero Waste DC plans. Mayor Bowser’s pledge to make Washington, DC carbon-neutral and climate-resilient by as early as 2040 will transform the District into the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city for both District residents and employees.
