DC Opportunity Scholarships Still Available for Fall 2020

Sunday, August 2, 2020

(Washington, DC) – District families are still able to apply the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP), which provides up to $13,534 for high school students and $9,022 for elementary and middle school students to attend independent schools in Washington, DC.

In addition to DC residency, students must be either recipients of SNAP benefits or meet income guidelines – at or below 185% of the income threshold for first-time applicants, or 300% of the income threshold for renewing families.

Families must separately complete the required applications for the independent schools they wish to attend, which have their own deadlines. OSP will reimburse families for the cost of up to five applications. In the District, 43 independent and parochial schools participate in the OSP; 41 of these schools enrolled OSP students last year.

In School Year 2019-20, 1,732 students used an OSP scholarship at a participating school, and 42% of OSP students received SNAP and/or TANF benefits. Over 75% of enrolled students reside in Wards 4, 7, or 8, with an average annual household income of $26,440. Since its establishment, nearly 10,000 DC students have benefited from OSP.
