(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the DC Department of General Services (DGS), DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS), and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) joined community members and partners to unveil a state-of-the-art SaveStation AED cabinet and life saving tower at Banneker Recreation Center. The initiative is part of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s ongoing investment in community safety and health infrastructure across all eight wards. “We are proud to bring this life saving technology directly into our community spaces,” said Delano Hunter, Director of the Department of General Services. “Whether someone is playing basketball, taking a fitness class, or just enjoying the park, they now have immediate access to equipment that could mean the difference between life and death. This is community care in action,” stated Director Hunter. This public installation ensures that residents and visitors to Banneker Recreation Center are protected with the tools and technology needed for rapid emergency response. “Placing this AED at Banneker, available 24/7, means that this life-saving device is exactly where it can do the most good,” said Director Thennie Freeman of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “It brings an added layer of safety and peace of mind for the thousands who use the surrounding amenities. It’s about protecting our community where they live, play, and connect,” stated Director Freeman.
The new cabinet, donated by SaveStation, is climate controlled, weatherproof, alarmed, and monitored 24/7 to ensure it remains accessible and operational during emergencies. The AED device inside, donated by ZOLL, is a top-tier, easy-to-use defibrillator capable of delivering life-saving care during cardiac events. It reflects the District’s commitment to putting life saving resources directly into the hands of the community.
