(Washington, DC) - The Department of General Services (DGS) has named Mark Chambers as the new Associate Director for the Sustainability and Energy Division. In this role, he will oversee the District’s energy procurement, natural resource conservation, and sustainable development efforts across the City’s properties.

“With his experience and institutional knowledge, Mark has the ability to take our energy and sustainability goals to the next level,” said Brian J. Hanlon, DGS Director.

As Associate Director, Mr. Chambers will continue the work of reducing the District portfolio’s demand and de-carbonizing energy supply through renewable power purchasing, as well as focusing DGS’s efforts on forward looking urbanism that prioritizes resilient development in response to the climate crisis. For the last three years, Mr. Chambers served as the Sustainability Manager for DGS, managing natural resource conservation policy across the agency’s new construction and existing buildings portfolio.

“I’m excited to take on a larger role in an Agency that has such a tangible impact in the lives of District residents,” Chambers said. “By focusing on building performance transparency, we have an unprecedented opportunity to showcase the leadership of the District as we confront the challenge of climate change.”

Mr. Chambers joined the Department of Real Estate Services (DRES) as Project Manager and Sustainable Development Specialist in January of 2009. In this role, he provided direction to the DRES Construction Division on green building project management, directly managed the construction of several projects including the LEED Gold Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center, and was the principal manager of the DRES Sustainable Design Guide for Existing Buildings and Small Projects.

Prior to joining the District government, Mr. Chambers’ career includes architectural design, green building consulting and organizational sustainability policy development. Mr. Chambers is a licensed architect in the District of Columbia and Maryland. He holds a master’s degree in Public Policy and Management and a Bachelors of Architecture, both from Carnegie Mellon University
