Schools that maintain successful recycling programs have a “magic triangle” recycling team made up of three crucial roles—Leadership, Operations and Education.
Principals are responsible for delegating these leadership roles by completing the Principal Delegate Form. If your school does not currently have a recycling program, propose that your principal delegate a “magic triangle” team. Contact DGS with questions or to request on-site support.
For best results, use the DCPS Recycles! Leadership Responsibilities Checklist to make sure each person on your recycling leadership team is doing their part.
- Leadership delegate (Administration) is responsible for communicating responsibilities to all school staff and students and delegating leadership roles. Find the leadership delegate’s checklist here.
- Operations delegate (Maintenance Foreman) is responsible for assessing and communicating services, supply, and support needs to DGS as well as communicating responsibilities to other custodial staff. Find the operations delegate’s checklist here.
- Education delegate(s) (one or more Teacher or other staff) is/are responsible for promoting participation (proper sorting) among all staff and students. Educators may also work with DGS staff to create hands-on learning and leadership opportunities for students, such as conducting waste audits, organizing cafeteria bin monitors, composting on-site, or launching a campaign.
