Sherwood Play DC Playground

Sherwood Play DC Playground Rendering 2

Project Overview

A new playground will be constructed at Sherwood, which will also be used by neighboring School-Within-School (SWS). There's currently no playground there, but there is a large parking lot that is under-utilized. The neighboring School-Within-School (SWS) has a playground, but it's old and small. So as part of the PlayDC program, the big parking lot will become a new playground, available to SWS during school hours, and the old SWS playground will be razed to form a smaller parking lot.

Sherwood Play DC Playground RenderingOver half of the playground will be natural space (trees or other native plants) at the request of the community, and a small "seat wall" area forms an outdoor classroom for SWS students to learn about nature.

The firmed-up plans depict a "mound" that children can climb on, surrounded by a rain garden, native plants, and of course playground equipment for all ages.

The Mound builds on a theme of including multiple play areas filled with equipment that can be used in multiple ways or by multiple children at the same time. Coming from 10th Street, the playground can be accessed via a new "meadow walk" that incorporates the existing trees and creates a natural play space that also includes interactive elements such as a "human sundial" and musical equipment. The playground can also be accessed from the track and a new walkway from the school.

Both concepts feature custom, iconic pieces that challenge children of all ages, as well as inclusive pieces designed for all ages and abilities.
