DGS is proud to share this DCPS Recycles! Honor Roll Success Story from West Education Campus!
Teacher Kelly McNulty at West Education Campus, located in Ward 4, was able to integrate recycling into an important classroom subject - community service. West EC offers Preferred Activity Classes (PAC) that allows students to choose classes based on the topics that they enjoy. McNulty, the teacher of the PAC entitled “Giving Back: West Style” developed a community service curriculum focused on recycling awareness, education, and outreach in school because she recognized that it would significantly strengthen their school’s recycling program.
During this PAC, West students grades kindergarten through third grade, worked together as the “litter police” to empty out classroom recycling bins, create signs for recycling bins around the building, and make crafts out of recyclable materials that school staff had brought from home. Now each classroom is equipped with a trash can and a blue recycling bin labeled with labels DGS provided as well as cute, hand-crafted signs created by the student. Now their school’s recycling program has greatly improved. West EC demonstrates that recycling can be used as a great and easy way to get students involved in a community service project with immediate impact!
