(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, July 17 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will visit Brookland Middle School in Ward 5 to participate in a hands-on robotics lesson with students enrolled in DC Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) Summer Enrichment Program. The visit is part of the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to ensuring DC youth have access to free, safe, fun, and academically enriching opportunities over the summer.
DC Public Schools (DCPS) offers a variety of free learning opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students during summer break. The CTE Summer Enrichment Program, designed specifically for rising 6th–8th graders, gives students the chance to explore high-demand career fields through engaging, hands-on experiences.
Students enrolled in the “Mastering Robotics” course are introduced to the fundamentals of robotics through interactive projects and lessons. Participants learn how to build, program, and control robots while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Other immersive CTE offerings include exploration in medicine, culinary arts, and digital storytelling.
The Mayor’s FY26 budget, Grow DC, invests in both classroom learning and year-round enrichment for students. The budget includes $2.8 billion for DCPS and public charter schools, $270 million for teacher pay raises, and $2 billion to modernize school buildings citywide. It also includes $27 million to support out-of-school time grants, ensuring more than 15,000 students can access free, high-quality afterschool and summer programs that keep learning going beyond the school year.
